In a 2007 study, researchers examined CBD’s effect on cells lining the coronary artery, the main supplier of blood to the heart, in diabetic conditions. When researchers administered a high dose of glucose to human coronary artery cells to mimic diabetic conditions, the cells exhibited an inflammatory response associated with the greatest risks that come with diabetes. However, when the cells were pretreated with CBD, the inflammatory response was markedly reduced, pointing to CBD’s potential to help combat the inflammation and plaque build-up of heart disease born from conditions like diabetes.
Finally, a 2009 review by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine looked at the potential for using cannabinoids as anti-inflammatory drugs. One of the key findings from the review was CBD’s effect on cytokine production. Cytokines are small proteins released by the body in times of stress, and are one of the primary initiators of inflammation.
